Death toll rises to 3,434 in Spain

The number of deaths in Spain as a result of the novel Coronavirus rose to 3,434 on Tuesday. 47,610 people have been infected and 3,166 are being treated in ICU. Spain has called for a nationwide lockdown on March 14th, and health authorities hope that these measures will soon result in decreasing numbers.

Man in Taiwan fined $33,000 for breaking self-isolation

During a routine police check at a nightclub, the man was caught violating his mandatory 14-day self-isolation after he had returned from Southeast Asia. He got the maximum fine of 1 million Taiwanese Dollar which translates to around $33,000 US Dollar.

Brazilian President, Bolsonaro, dismisses Covid-19 pandemic and face protests

During a live TV pronouncement, President Jair Bolsonaro has called the virus "little flu" and stated the pandemic is a "fantasy." The Brazilian President ordered State Governors to end the quarantine currently in place on São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro -- Brazil's two most populous states.

There were protests across the country, with quarantined people banging pots and pans from their balconies.

Modi Announces 21-Day Lockdown for India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India has announced a nationwide lockdown of three weeks for the country to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. In a televised address, Modi again emphasised the importance of social distancing. The lockdown will be a complete ban on people leaving their homes. The Prime Minister said: "If we don't handle these 21 days well, then our country, your family will go backwards by 21 years."

United Kingdom goes into lockdown

In a televised address to the nation on monday evening, prime minister Boris Johnson informed the public of a lockdown starting monday night. Public spaces will be closed and people will only be allowed to leave their homes for grocery shopping, one form of exercise per day and if travel to work can´t be avoided. The lockdown will last for at least three weeks, after which the government will reexamine the situation.

Greek police arrests Orthodox priest after he celebrated a mass breaking the Covid-19 measures

The metropolitan bishop Seraphim of Kythira had celebrated a Mass on March 20th despite the country suspending all religions gatherings following the spread of the coronavirus. He was arrested by the police, questioned, prompted to follow the regulations and afterwards released.

Italy government uses military to enforce lockdown

After announcing 627 new deaths from the coronavirus, the highest number in a single day worldwide so far, on Friday 20th, the Italian government has now called the military in to enforce the lockdown of the Lombardy region. Attilio Fontana, the Lombardy region president, said that the request for military help has been accepted and "114 soldiers will be on the ground throughout Lombardy", which is according to him still too little since no slowing down in the infection and death numbers can be seen so far.

Brazil closes down all land borders and restricts entry of Europeans and Pacific Asians

According to AFP News Brazil announced on Thursday they would close down all land borders and prohibit people from European and many Pacific Asian countries who are not citizens of Brazil from entering the country.
