Ferguson voters have elected Ella Jones as the city’s first black mayor as protests over the death of George Floyd, and police treatment of black communities roil the nation.

Six years ago protests in Ferguson, and days of clashes between police and demonstrators, were sparked by the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. A white police officer also killed the young black man.

Jones, a city councilwoman, will also become the first woman to serve as mayor of the St. Louis suburb.
