Malawai: President reverses his campaign promise to create one million jobs

President Lazarus Chakwera has reversed his campaign promise to create one million jobs. He justified his action by saying that the government could only employ 200,000 people and could not create more jobs on its own. Chakwera calls on every entrepreneur to employ more people.

Critics have accused Chakwera that he had no job creation plan and that his promise was nothing more than a campaign strategy.

Malawi: Masks now mandatory in public places

Malawi has made masks mandatory in public places starting Friday night. Violations will be fined $15. Activists are urging the government to provide free masks. The government has also closed all shops located near hospitals and forbid public gatherings. Malawi has around 100 confirmed daily cases.

Nine members (seven Chinese nationals, two Malawians) of a Chinese wildlife trafficking gang were found guilty of trafficking protected animal species and parts. These parts include ivory, rhino horns and pangolin scales. Each member will have to serve seven years in jail and will be deported upon release.

Malawi: Former President’s bodyguard arrested again

Norman Chisale was arrested for the second time, this time on the charge of attempted murder of a woman in Blantyre two months ago. Chisale used to be President Peter Mutharika’s bodyguard. On Tuesday he was arrested for money-laundering and fraud, but was granted bail.

Former opposition chief Lazarus Chakwera has won the presidential election in Malawi against incumbent Peter Mutharika. He won with 58,57% of the votes in Tuesday's election. Chakwera said his win was a "victory for democracy and justice".

"There's no cause for fear because I will be your president and my policy for inclusivity means we are building a new Malawi for all of us," Chakwera told BBC.

Rihanna's Clara Lionel Foundation donates $5 million to fight coronavirus

The foundation has announced that the money will go to different initiatives and groups in order to "to immediately mobilize a broad response working with on-the-ground partners". The goal is to support food banks, the acceleration of testing, to buy protective equipment and other measurements. The foundation is distributing the money to multiple countries including the United States, Haiti and Malawi.
