The National People's Congress passed a new security law for Hong Kong, which would make it a crime to undermine Beijing's authority in the territory.
The new law bans sedition, secession and subversion of the central government and allows China's state security agencies to operate in the city.

Wuhan has completed over 2.4 million tests for Covid-19 in two days

The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the Covid-19 originated, has successfully tested around 2.4 million people in just two days. The city council had ordered the mass testing with the goal to find hidden carriers and prevent a second wave of outbreaks, as the lockdown in the city has been eased. Wuhan plans on continuing the testing with the aim to test all 11 million residents.

China abandons GDP goal for the first time since 1990

The Chinese premier Li Keqiang has announced in his opening speech of the National People's Congress (NPC) that the country would not set a goal for the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country. According to him the decision was made based on the uncertainties due to the "Covid-19 pandemic and the world economic and trade environment".

Passenger plane crashes near Karachi, Pakistan

A plane from the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has crashed into a residential area near Karachi in Pakistan. Currently, it's unclear if any of the 99 passengers and eight crew members have survived or what the reasons for the crash are. According to some reports the pilot had called in technical difficulties minutes before the crash.

Wuhan plans on testing all 11 million residents for Covid-19

The different city districts of Wuhan have been ordered to submit plans on how to test their whole population within ten days. The city plans to test all of its 11 million citizens while focusing on vulnerable groups and real estate compounds first.

China reclassified city near Russia and North Korea as "high risk" again

After multiple locally transmitted cases, China has reclassified the city of Shulan near the borders of North Korea and Russia as "high risk" and has closed all public places including cinemas, libraries and others with the order that all residents must stay home with the exception of "unusual circumstances". The country had reported a total of 17 new cases on Sunday.

Chinese state media dismisses accusation that Covid-19 originated in a laboratory

The Global Times newspaper, which is owned by the Chinese State and controlled by the ruling Chinese Communist Party, has published an editorial article reaction to the accusation of the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that there was "enormous evidence" for a laboratory origination of Covid-19. The article stated that "Pompeo does not have any evidence, and during Sunday's interview, he was bluffing" and asks for Pompeo to "present this so-called evidence to the world".

Hong Kong police arrest at least 14 pro-democracy activists

The police of Hong Kong have arrested at least 14 long time pro-democracy activists. Some of the activists have been charged with the illegal organization of protest marches in 2019.

Shenzhen announces plans to ban sale and consumption of cat and dog meat

The new law will put into place starting on May 1st. Shenzhen will be the first city in the country to enact such ban and does so after the coronavirus pandemic was linked to the consumption of wildlife animals by scientists. The cities government sai, according to Reuters, that "Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals" and that consumption ban is a common practice in developed countries.

China closes borders to prevent now Covid-19 from travellers

Most of the new coronavirus cases in China over the past weeks have been detected in people coming from abroad, while the newly reported local infections have steadily declined. On some days there were zero new local cases. In total China reported around 500 new cases over the past weeks and announced that it'll close its borders as a response.
