California has reported over 413,000 Covid-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, surpassing New York as the state with the most infections in the United States. New York's case rate per 100,000 residents is twice as high as California's.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said California's case count was "a sober reminder of why we are taking things as seriously as we are."
