Growing number of jobless people hidden from official unemployment figures

The unemployment rate in New Zealand jumped to 4.2% in March and around 40,000 people have applied for benefits since February. While many are showing up in these numbers, according to various reports, the figure of actual jobless workers is presumably higher. Workers, who had been out of work before the Covid-19 pandemic, are having a hard time finding employment in the current climate. Official figures also don't take into account people who do not qualify for unemployment benefits, e.g. if their spouse is employed, they are not eligible for benefits.
