HBO Max removed "Gone With the Wind" from its streaming service due to "racist depictions" after screenwriter John Ridley ("12 Years a Slave") called for its removal in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times. An HBO spokesperson called the film "a product of its time" that "depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society". According to an update of Variety, the removal is only temporary and "Gone With the Wind" will eventually return to the streaming service "with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of its racist depictions".
